Connection

Wi-Fi, mobile data and dropouts.

Phones can follow on the church Wi-Fi or their own mobile data; the sound desk needs a steady connection of its own. When either drops, Voclyn reconnects by itself and phones catch up with what was said.

On the phones

A dropout, on a phone.

What the listener page shows while its connection is gone, and when it's back.

  • ReconnectingThe phone lost its connection; the last words stay on the page.
  • BackIt says so, with what was said meanwhile.
  • OfflineA minute without a connection: join the Wi-Fi or use data, then Retry.

The desk comes first

Every phone’s captions start at the console, so its connection matters most. Use a cable to the router if you can, or the strongest Wi-Fi in the building; a phone’s hotspot makes a good spare.

  • The list on the Go live card ticks Internet, and the top bar says Connected, Reconnecting… or Offline.
  • If the desk’s connection drops mid-service, the console says “Internet is slow. Phones may lag a few seconds; captions catch up by themselves.” It reconnects by itself and sends the most recent sound it kept meanwhile.
  • Phones stay on the service, with no new words until the desk is back. If the console is away for a minute and a half, the service ends; hold to go live again and phones follow the new one.

Phones

  • Wi-Fi or mobile data, either works. Captions use a few MB an hour, the AI voice about 11 MB an hour.
  • A guest Wi-Fi with a sign-in page has to be passed first; until then the page may say Offline.
  • Reconnecting shows after a couple of seconds without a connection, with the last words still there. When the phone is back it says “Reconnected · caught up” and shows what was said meanwhile.
  • Offline shows after a minute, or at once when the phone knows it has no network: “No connection. Check Wi-Fi or use mobile data.” Retry reloads the page.
  • A phone that slept catches up when it wakes. “Screen stays on during the service”, in the page’s Display settings and on by default, keeps it awake where the phone allows.

Phones on the Wi-Fi can't connect

If phones on mobile data follow the service and phones on the church Wi-Fi stay on Reconnecting, the network is blocking the live connection: a content filter, a firewall or a guest network’s rules. Ask whoever runs it to allow secure WebSocket connections (wss, on port 443), which the captions use, or ask people to use mobile data for now.

Signal in the room

Basements, balconies and thick walls can leave the back rows with little signal. In your rehearsal, try a phone on Wi-Fi and one on mobile data in the seats furthest from the router.

Talk to us

A person answers hello@voclyn.com Sundays 7:00–13:00 Vancouver time. Say which church and room it is (the link people scan), what the console and the phones show, and add a screenshot if you can.

Outside those hours, write anyway: we answer as soon as we can.

A few MB an hour for captions, and about 11 MB an hour with the AI voice on.

Phones show Reconnecting and catch up with what was said when the connection returns, and the console reconnects by itself. If the sound desk stays offline for a minute and a half, the service ends and can be started again.
